There is a published test, a published threshold, and a value the manufacturer can give you for any tile you are considering. Very few homeowners are ever shown it, and almost none are told what it does not cover.
Choosing bathroom tile on appearance and then hoping it performs underfoot is the default approach, and it is avoidable. The value is produced by a laboratory test using a standardized sensor and a wetting solution, so results from different manufacturers are comparable. A tile that has been tested has a number, and that number is available to you.
The requirement most people encounter is a minimum DCOF of 0.42 for level interior floors expected to be walked upon when wet with water. That figure comes from the tile industry standard rather than from any individual manufacturer.
The standard that specifies it is ANSI A326.3, the test method for dynamic coefficient of friction of hard surface flooring materials, which was released in 2017 and superseded the method previously contained in ANSI A137.1. If someone quotes you A137.1 for this today, they are working from a superseded reference. A326.3 also introduced product use classifications, so manufacturers indicate the conditions a tile is suitable for rather than leaving you to infer it.
Almost any tile performs acceptably when dry. The whole point of the measurement is what happens when there is water on it, which in a bathroom is the condition that matters.
This is why a showroom sample tells you very little. A dry tile under your hand in a showroom is not the surface you will be stepping onto, and the only honest way to compare two candidates is to compare their tested values under wet conditions.
It is also why “textured” and “matte” are not specifications. Both describe how a tile looks and feels in the hand, and neither tells you how it performs with water and bare feet on it. A matte tile can test lower than a glossier one with a better-engineered surface, so the descriptive words are a starting point for a conversation rather than an answer.
Meeting the threshold is necessary and it is not sufficient. Several things can undo a compliant tile.
A tile is tested as a product, not as an installed floor. Grout joint width and depth, whether the floor is flat, and how the tiles sit relative to each other all affect what a foot meets.
Large-format tile with minimal joints presents a broader continuous slick area when wet, while smaller formats with more grout lines break that up. That is a genuine performance difference produced entirely by the installation decision rather than by the tile.
More texture generally means more grip and also more places for soap residue and grime to accumulate. A heavily textured floor that is difficult to clean can end up with a film on it that reduces grip below where a smoother, cleaner floor would sit.
The practical answer is a texture the household will realistically maintain. A tile that performs well in a laboratory and poorly in a real bathroom because nobody can clean it properly has not solved the problem.
Grout choice belongs in the same conversation. The joints are part of the walking surface, and a grout that stains, erodes, or is difficult to keep clean will change how the floor behaves over time even when the tile itself is unchanged. Specifying the grout alongside the tile, rather than treating it as a color decision at the end, is worth the few minutes it takes.
Soap and shampoo residue reduce grip considerably, and they are present in exactly the place where grip matters most. Bath mats that slide, or that bunch, introduce their own hazard.
None of this is a reason to skip the specification. It is a reason to treat the tile as one part of a floor rather than as the whole answer.
A bathroom is not one floor. It is several zones with different exposure, and specifying them identically is a missed opportunity.
This is the wettest area, it holds soap residue, and it is sloped to a drain, which means gravity is already working against the person standing on it. It justifies the highest slip resistance in the room.
Smaller formats are common here for a practical reason: they accommodate the slope to the drain and their additional grout lines add grip. A well-detailed shower base solves the same problem in a single manufactured piece with a factory-textured surface.
The main floor sees water splashed and tracked rather than run over it continuously, and it is where people walk while drying off. It needs to meet the wet-condition threshold, but the balance can shift toward something more comfortable and easier to clean.
This is also the largest visible area in the room, so it is where most people want the finish they actually like. Choosing it from among tiles that qualify, rather than qualifying the tile you already chose, is the order that works.
The step from a shower into the room, and any change of level or material, are the points where footing changes unexpectedly. That is precisely where a slip is most likely.
Reducing the number of transitions helps, which is one of several reasons barrier-free showers are increasingly specified. Where a threshold remains, it should be detailed deliberately rather than left as whatever the two materials happened to produce.
The area immediately outside the shower deserves the same attention. Water is carried out on feet and drips from a towel, so the first stride into the room is often onto a wet floor that was specified as a dry-ish zone. Extending the more slip-resistant selection past the enclosure by a reasonable margin costs very little and covers the spot where people are least prepared for the surface to be wet.
Where a bath mat lives there, it should be one that grips the tile rather than one that slides on it. A mat that moves underfoot on a compliant floor reintroduces exactly the hazard the specification was meant to remove.
The process is straightforward once you know what to ask for, and it takes the guesswork out of the decision.
Request the DCOF value and the product use classification for any tile under consideration. A reputable supplier can produce both, and a supplier who cannot is telling you something useful.
Get it before you fall in love with a tile rather than after. The question is easy to ask at the shortlist stage and awkward once a decision has been made emotionally, and a shortlist filtered on performance first still leaves plenty of room for preference.
Decide the requirement for the shower floor first, since it is the hardest case, then the main floor, then the transitions. Working outward from the most demanding area avoids ending up with a compromise everywhere.
Zoning also lets the budget go where it matters. The shower floor is a small area, so specifying it well adds little to the total, while the main floor is large enough that the choice there drives most of the cost. Getting that split right usually produces a better bathroom than spending evenly across both.
Consider the format, the grout joints, the flatness of the substrate, and how the household will clean it. Those decide the performance of the finished floor at least as much as the tile’s tested value does.
